There are three real ways to get rid of a treadmill in South Florida: sell or donate it if it still runs, put it at the curb if your city will take it, or have it hauled. The catch nobody warns you about is the second one. Most cities here will not take the console at the curb at all, because a treadmill is not one bulk item. It is a two-person carry of 200 to 350 pounds with a regulated electronic waste stream bolted to the front of it. Free quote: (954) 774-0277.

One machine, three separate waste streams
This is why exercise equipment gets tagged and left at the curb while the sofa next to it disappears. A city crew does not see one bulk item. It sees three things bolted together, and one of them is regulated.
- The frame and the motor. Steel, aluminium, a heavy DC motor and a flywheel. Scrap metal, and the only part with any residual value.
- The console. A circuit board, a display, and on anything modern a touchscreen and a battery. Regulated electronic waste, not household trash, so it goes to a permitted electronics recycler with a handling charge attached.
- The deck, the belt and the mat. Laminated MDF, rubber and plastic. Landfill, and heavier than it looks.
Will your city take it at the curb?
Partly, and the part it refuses is the part attached to everything else.
- Coconut Creek names electronics as an excluded item on its Republic Services bulk program. A treadmill with a console is, strictly, electronics attached to bulk.
- Coral Springs excludes electronics with batteries and caps bulk at 6 cubic yards per collection day.
- Margate excludes electronics outright and caps bulk at 3 cubic yards a week. A treadmill and a weight bench is most of that.
- Pompano Beach allows 4 cubic yards a week and refuses construction debris.
- Tamarac allows 3 cubic yards of bulk and yard waste combined for single-family homes, and condominiums get bulk only once a month.
- Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park run bulk monthly, so a machine that misses the window sits in your garage for four more weeks.
The county backstop does not cover most of this area either. Broward runs three Saturday-only electronics drop-off centres, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., proof of residency required, for participating municipalities only. Margate, Parkland, Lighthouse Point and Oakland Park residents can use them. Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Tamarac, Sunrise, Plantation and Fort Lauderdale residents get turned around at the gate.
What makes one machine harder to haul than another
| What you have | What the crew is actually dealing with |
|---|---|
| Treadmill | 200 to 350 lbs and a two-person carry. Folding home models are the easy end of it |
| Elliptical or exercise bike | Awkward more than heavy, and often needs partial disassembly to clear a doorway |
| Home gym, rack or full weight set | 300 to 600+ lbs. Always a teardown. Bolts, cables and plates, carried in trips |
| Peloton, Tonal or a mirror-style trainer | Light frame, but the screen is regulated e-waste and goes to a permitted recycler |
| A whole garage gym cleared at once | Stops being a per-item job and becomes a volume one, usually around half a truck |
Three things move a quote here: electronics handling on the console, disassembly where a rack comes apart at the bolts, and stairs. All three are on the written quote before anybody touches the machine, and you pay once it is loaded. The mechanic is in how junk removal pricing works.
Is it worth anything?
If it powers on, holds a speed, the belt is not shredded and the deck is not cupped, it can sell or donate. If it does not power on, it is not a donation. It is a haul with extra steps, and the charity will tell you so.
- Habitat for Humanity of Broward ReStore, 505 W. Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 954-763-7771. Roughly Mon to Fri 10 to 6, Sat 9 to 6, closed Sunday. Takes gently used furniture, appliances and home goods.
- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Palm Beach County ReStore, 1900 N. Federal Highway, Delray Beach, 561-202-1630. The practical drop for Boca Raton, Delray and Boynton jobs.
- The Salvation Army schedules free donation pickups through satruck.org and takes furniture and household goods.
- Goodwill South Florida covers Broward; Gulfstream Goodwill covers Palm Beach County. Sellable condition only, and oversized pickup is a paid service.
- Faith Farm Ministries runs free furniture donation pickups out of Boynton Beach and Fort Lauderdale. A useful second call when a ReStore passes.
Call before you load it in the car. Every one of these decides item by item, and fitness equipment is what they are most likely to decline. Getting a "no" on the phone beats getting one in a loading bay.
Peloton, Tonal and the screen-based trainers
Same rule, sharper edges. The frame is scrap steel. The screen is a tablet bolted to a bike, and it is e-waste. Before it leaves the house, log out of the account and factory reset the display, the same way you would a phone. If you are selling privately, the account transfer matters more to the buyer than the frame does.
The stairwell problem
Much of the housing here is two- and three-story condo buildings from the 1970s and 80s with exterior stairs and no service elevator. Wynmoor in Coconut Creek. Century Village East in Deerfield Beach. Kings Point and the Mainlands in Tamarac. Sunrise Lakes. A rack, a plate tree and a treadmill on a second floor is a hand carry down an outside stairwell, which is why whoever quotes it should look at the stairs before the machine.
This is the one category where the name on the truck is not a joke. Johnny came to hauling after knee injuries ended a college sports career and pushed him into the gym. Loaded racks and 300-pound decks down a stairwell are the house speciality, not the awkward part of the day.
Disassembly: when it helps, and when it costs you a Saturday
- Fold it, do not strip it. Most home treadmills fold at the deck hinge, which is usually enough to clear a doorway. Taking the console off first rarely helps and loses you the handles.
- Plates come off first, always. Carry them in trips. A loaded rack is not a two-person lift, it is a two-person injury.
- Racks come apart at the bolts, and a rack assembled inside the room has to leave the same way.
- Cut nothing. People take a saw to a rack to make it fit and end up with sharp steel their city will not collect as bulk anyway.
Take it apart, then find the frame still does not clear the door, and you have spent an afternoon for nothing. Send a photo first. Full detail is on the exercise equipment removal page, and if the machine is part of a bigger clear-out, that is a garage cleanout.
