Yard waste goes in a separate pile from bulk
This is the number one reason a pile gets skipped in South Florida, and it takes ten seconds to fix. In Coral Springs, Margate, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Lighthouse Point, vegetation and bulk are two different streams and they must be in two physically separate piles at the curb. Mix a broken chair into the branches and the whole thing gets tagged rather than hauled.
- Two piles, three feet apart. Vegetation on one side, household bulk on the other, clear of mailboxes, cars, hydrants and storm drains.
- Never under a low branch or a power line. Most cities will not send the grapple truck under wires, and the pile simply stays.
- Watch the set-out window. Margate allows three days early. Coconut Creek, Fort Lauderdale and Deerfield Beach allow 24 hours. Early piles draw a courtesy notice, then a citation.
Cut to length, tied, and under the weight limit
Every city here has its own sizing rule for vegetation, which is how a Saturday of trimming turns into a Sunday of cutting things smaller. Tamarac, Deerfield Beach, Parkland and Boynton Beach want four-foot sections tied into bundles of 40 to 50 pounds. Plantation wants six-foot lengths under 50 pounds. Pompano Beach takes branches under six inches in diameter and six feet long. Coral Springs caps limbs at five feet and eight inches in diameter. Margate allows palm fronds and limbs up to eight inches and six feet.
If your landscaper made the pile, the city will not take it
This one catches people every time. Debris generated by a paid landscaper or a private contractor is treated as commercial waste rather than residential yard trash, and it is excluded from the free program in Deerfield Beach, Tamarac, Boca Raton, Sunrise and Lighthouse Point.

Coral Springs, Margate, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and Lighthouse Point all require vegetation and household bulk in separate piles, and a mixed pile gets tagged instead of hauled. The other common reasons: branches over the size limit, bundles over the weight limit, the pile set out too early, or a pile under a power line where the grapple truck will not reach.
How long after a hurricane before the city picks up debris?
Weeks, usually. Regular collection gets suspended, every street in the county needs the same truck, and cities bring in contracted crews who work the city in passes. If your pile is ordinary vegetation and it is already at the right-of-way, wait, because the sweep is free and it will reach you. Call us when waiting is not an option: a limb on the driveway, a blocked gate, a closing date, an HOA notice, or debris the vegetative route will never take.
